You can eat most things with braces, but you have to be careful with hard, sticky, or chewy foods. A healthy diet consisting of dairy products, breads, soft-cooked meats and vegetable, grains, and fruits are safe to eat. You may find it helpful to cut sandwiches and any crunchy fruits and vegetables into bite-sized pieces.

There are some food items you should avoid eating if you have braces. These include crunchy, hard, sticky, and chewy foods as they can damage your braces or get stuck in them.

The side effects of braces include:

  • Ache in your mouth
  • Soreness in your gums
  • Increased saliva production
  • Tenderness in your teeth
  • Redness and irritation in your gums
  • Difficulty eating certain foods

If you experience any of these side effects, be sure to contact your orthodontist so they can help you manage them.

Rubber bands are used to help keep braces in place and to help move teeth into the correct position. It improves the fit of your upper and lower teeth/jaws. Rubber bands can help in the proper alignment of teeth by adjusting different types of jaw misalignments such as overbite, underbite, open bite, and crossbite.

The ideal time to get braces is around 11 years old due to most of the permanent teeth being erupted by this age. However, some orthodontists will do what they call "Phase 1 treatment" around age 7. Phase 1 treatment can help to make orthodontic treatment easier later on, or to prevent the need for braces altogether.

Spacers are small elastic or metal devices that are placed between teeth in order to create gaps. which will allow for metal orthodontic bands to be placed.

The design of braces can make it easy for food particles to get stuck and accumulate plaque. This can cause problems like white scars on your teeth, cavities, gum disease, or bone loss if not cleaned properly.

Traditional braces generally consist of metal or stainless steel brackets, which can be made from different materials such as ceramic, plastic, metal, or a combination.

Lingual braces are a type of braces that are placed on the back of your teeth, on the tongue side of the teeth. They are similar to conventional braces in terms of components, but they are less visible.

Brackets are small metal or ceramic modules that are attached to front and side teeth. They act as guides to help move teeth and hold wires in place. They are attached directly to the enamel of a tooth with a special adhesive.

Power chains are made of an elastic material and are composed of a series of connected rings. They are often used in braces in order to apply more force to a specific area of the mouth. The most common use for power chains is to close gaps between teeth. Power chains can be very effective in aligning teeth and the jaw.

Ceramic braces are like conventional metal braces and can be used for various complex dental treatments. They are also known as clear braces. The major use of ceramic braces is to straighten teeth and fix bite problems. Some people opt for ceramic braces because they are less noticeable than traditional metal brackets.

It really varies from case to case and personal preference. Braces are more efficient than Invisalign at resolving complex dental issues because they can align teeth and close gaps much faster. The force level of braces is more powerful than Invisalign treatment, which allows them to move teeth into the desired position more quickly.

Invisalign is more popular with adults and some teenagers because they are practically invisible. They are also more convenient, resulting in shorter appointment times and less frequent follow-up visits during the course of treatment. Due to being removable trays, oral home care is much easier with Invisalign, making it easier to maintain healthy gums and lessening the risk of cavities.

You can easily get rid of braces pain by following certain procedures.
  • Use oral anesthetics

  • Take over-the-counter pain medicine

  • Drink ice water

  • Apply an ice pack

  • Stick to soft foods

  • Apply orthodontic wax

  • Gum massage

  • A warm salt water rinse

  • Maintain good oral hygiene

Ceramic braces are more popular than traditional braces. In recent years, self-ligating braces have become more popular.

Traditional braces are most commonly used for overbite dental conditions. However, minor or moderate overbites may also be corrected with an aligner, such as Invisalign braces.

Braces work by putting pressure on your teeth to realign them. This can sometimes cause pain or sensitivity in your teeth and gums. You may also feel pain around your cheeks. Typically the discomfort from braces adjustments only last 1-2 days.

Dentists typically recommend that patients with braces return every six weeks so that the braces can be tightened or adjusted as necessary. However, because every mouth is different, some patients may need to return more or less often than this.

Braces can cause plaque to build up on teeth or irritate gums. This can lead to a condition called gingival hyperplasia. Poor oral hygiene or underlying health conditions like diabetes or obesity can make gum inflammation more likely.

The gap created by braces is temporary and normal. Braces fix overcrowding by moving teeth into one or two areas, which creates space for other teeth to straighten out.

Orthodontists typically begin dental treatment by placing braces on the upper teeth first. This is because the upper teeth and jawbone usually take longer to align and move than the lower teeth.

Once your braces are removed, a small part of your teeth that were covered by the braces will be exposed. This can make your teeth sensitive for a week or so as they adjust to their new position.

  • Acquire a braces floss aid such as the blue loops typically given at your orthodontist office. You can also Oral B Super Floss, or Crest Glide Threader floss, which is a type of orthodontic floss. Both types of these floss threaders have a stiff end used to thread the floss under the orthodontic wires and between the teeth.

  • Brush your teeth to remove bacteria, food particles, and plaque. Make sure you brush all surfaces of your teeth.

  • You cannot wrap floss around your fingers while using floss threaders like you typically would with regular floss.

  • Line up the stiff end of the floss threader between your teeth and above the orthodontic wire and thread it through your teeth.

  • Move the floss between the teeth, and into the movable gum tissue to remove any food particles and plaque build-up between teeth.

  • Wipe the used floss after flossing each tooth so you don't put germs back into your mouth.

  • Move on to the next tooth and repeat the process.

  • Other flossing tools for braces include floss picks, such as "Platypus" that have a slim edge that is able to fit between the tooth and wire. WaterPik is another useful tool used for flushing out the braces and gums.

It will take approximately 1-2 hours to have braces placed on your teeth. The length of time for the appointment may vary depending on the type of braces and treatment required.

It is not recommended to whiten teeth with traditional metal braces on as the teeth will whiten everything except where the brackets are. However, you can whiten your teeth if you are in tray aligners, such as Invisalign.

There are three main types of teeth whitening: in-office whitening, at-home whitening, and everyday whitening. You can whiten your teeth with whitening strips, whitening trays, whitening toothpaste, mouthwash, and an electric toothbrush.

There are many different methods that can be used in order to straighten teeth, such as incognito hidden braces, retainers, headgear, dental veneers or invisible tray aligners such as Invisalign or similar.

You should wear your removable retainer for at least 12 months after getting your braces removed. You might have to wear it full time during the initial stage for 4-6 months.

The average orthodontic patient will need to wear braces for 18-24 months, though treatment for older patients with more complex issues could take up to 3 years. If you have less severe issues or are a good candidate for clear aligners like Invisalign, treatment may only take 6-12 months.

Removal of braces is a complex procedure. It is recommended that only a professional dentist should remove braces.

Ceramic braces are more comfortable to wear for dental patients than metal braces because the high-quality materials used in ceramic braces are not abrasive and will not irritate your gums or the sides of your mouth.

Tooth extraction is based on a dental patient's specific needs. Generally, the premolar teeth are extracted for braces.

Teledentistry is the use of technology to provide dental care, consultations, diagnosis, and patient education remotely. This allows patients to access experts from their own homes or offices via webcam, regardless of location.

In 1994, the Department of Defense started a program called "total dental access" which sought to improve patient care by providing teeth-related information through Teledentistry. This initiative promoted communication and increased dental education.

D9995 teledentistry - synchronous; real-time encounter should be reported in addition to other procedures (eg: diagnostic) delivered to the patient on the date of service.

D9996 teledentistry - asynchronous; information stored and forwarded to a dentist for subsequent review.

Teledentistry provides and supports dental care delivery, diagnosis, consultation, treatment, transfer of dental information, and education.
Uses of teledentistry:
  • Emergency dental care

  • Electronic prescriptions

  • Post-operative appointments

  • General Consultations

  • Second Opinions

Teledentistry offers patients more affordable dental care options than the traditional method. It saves patients time and money needed to travel into an in-person dental clinic. Also due to convenience, minor issues can be easily discovered while small, preventing more costly procedures in the future, such as a root canal or implant.

  • Improved clinical efficiency and safety

  • Ease of referrals and seeking second opinions from other dentists

  • Increased customer base

  • Enhanced patient education and engagement

  • Increased revenue

Results are typically returned within 7 days of the date your sample is received. Your results will be sent to you directly. You can review your results with a licensed Dentist on Dentulu or print them to share with your regular dentist.

Dentulu Dentists are available to review the results of your salivary diagnostics from almost any device that connects to the internet. Instead of physically traveling to a local dental office, Dentulu dentists provide convenient and affordable consultations directly through Telemedicine. You can schedule a consultation via your cell phone, computer, tablet, and even some smart televisions. Should an in-person visit be necessary, Dentulu will refer you to a local dental office for consultation and treatment.

We highly encourage you to review your salivary testing results with your existing dentist and medical doctor. Dentulu provides nationwide access to licensed dentists in your state who are available to review your results with you in the comfort of your home and make recommendations on treatment options. We are able to provide prescriptions directly to your pharmacy and if necessary provide free referrals to local dentists who can provide you with the necessary dental treatments you may need based on your specific problems. You can also print and download your results to review with your own dentist.

We highly encourage you to test yourself and as many family and friends as possible. The oral microbiome is an integral and critical component of your overall health. Pathogens in the mouth can have a direct and indirect impact on your health, including not only gum disease and cavities, but also your cardiovascular and neurological health, as well as contribute to diabetes and pregnancy complications. It is highly recommended to take a test at least once a year.

We highly encourage our patients to get tested at least 2 times a year. After the initial test is completed, we will offer you suggestions and recommendations on how to address your specific problems. We encourage you to then retest after treatment to assess the results of treatment and see the benefits. There is no harm caused in testing more frequently since this test is non-invasive and simply requires a saliva sample.

Dentulu’s salivary testing is out of network with most insurances and is a fee for service diagnostic test. You can provide your receipt to your insurance company to check for reimbursement. Once you have received your customized report, your dental visits and treatment may be covered by your dental insurance but will vary depending on your specific insurance coverage. Many of Dentulu’s services are covered out of network through your dental and medical insurance and we recommend you provide your insurance company with your statement for reimbursement.

Most HSA and FSA include coverage for saliva testing, please check with your plan’s administrator for your specific coverage.

Dentulu’s treatment recommendations are customized for each patient based on the specific findings in your test. Treatment recommendations may range from antibiotics, certain mouthwashes, oral probiotics, laser dental treatment, and even periodontal trays from partners like Perio-Protect which help provide ongoing defense against certain dangerous bacteria.

Dentulu’s salivary testing provides a risk assessment based on biomarkers associated with chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, dementia, stroke, cardiovascular disease, and many other chronic conditions. While there are other types of salivary tests on the market that may be utilized for diagnosis of these conditions, the types of tests offered through Oral DNA and Dentulu simply provide an assessment of the presence and quantity of the pathogens in the saliva that help contribute to chronic health conditions.

Palliative care dentistry is the study and management of patients with active, progressive disease who are at risk for compromised oral health. The focus will always be on quality-of life considerations. A palliative dental practice focuses largely in providing palliative dental treatment to cancer sufferers or far-advanced diseases.

The mouth is often referred to as "the gateway" of our body because it becomes the initial site where treatment-related side effects manifest in terminally ill patients. In order to ensure that the patients are able to communicate, eat and swallow properly, the mouth needs care. Oral care is therefore essential in both palliative as well as end of life situations with goals on preventing oral complications or maintaining adequate functions while also trying to optimize patient's quality of life through comfortable treatment options.

  • Oral soreness

  • Dry mouth (cotton mouth)

  • Candidiasis (thrush or yeast infections)

  • Trouble swallowing

  • Denture problems

  • Difficulty talking

  • Poor oral hygiene

Preventive mouth care tips for hospice patients:
  • Keep lips moist

  • Brush teeth

  • Keep inside of mouth moist

  • Interproximal cleaning

  • Clean soft tissues

  • Clean dentures

Palliative treatment for dental pain is typically done on an emergency basis. This type of treatment helps to ease symptoms without curing the underlying condition. Dentists know that people who experience any kind of health emergency can be very stressed. This is especially true when they have a toothache! With dental pain almost never resolving on its own and usually getting worse over time, palliative treatment may need to be administered to help relieve the problem.

Portable units equipped with all sorts of modern equipment will make sure your teeth stay healthy while we work hard at keeping society healthier overall through preventative measures like cleanings and extractions when necessary.

Dental amalgam is a filling material used to repair cavities caused by tooth decay. It's made up of metals, with approximately half being elemental mercury content by weight. Dentists will sometimes use an alloy mixture that contains silver and tin as well as copper for more durable repairs.

The two most popular ways to repair a cavity are with composite and porcelain fillings. Each option has different benefits, so it’s important for patients to consider all their options before choosing one.

A buccal filling is a type of dental filling that is used to fill in cavities on the buccal surface of teeth. The buccal surface is the area of the tooth that faces the cheek.

New materials for teeth fillings, such as gold, porcelain, silver amalgam, tooth-colored plastic, and composite resin, have made great strides in modern dentistry in recent years. Glass ionomer, which contains glass particles, can also be used in ways similar to composite resin fillings.

Dentists can use fillings to restore your teeth to their original function and shape. This is done by filling in the damaged areas of the tooth with a material that will prevent further damage and restore the tooth to its original shape.

Composite fillings are tooth-colored resin materials used to fill teeth that have been damaged by cracks, decay, or other damage. The dentist will remove the decayed or damaged part of your teeth and then fill it with a composite filling. There are many types of composites available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

If you have suffered tooth damage, a temporary filling can be a great way to tide you over until you can get a permanent filling. These semi-permanent fillings are usually made from soft, flexible materials like zinc phosphate cement or glass ionomers, which will provide temporary strength until you can get to your next appointment.

The symptoms of mercury poisoning from dental fillings:
  • Irritability or mood changes

  • Numbness

  • Nervousness or anxiety

  • Depression

  • Physical tremors

  • Memory problems

Gold alloys are a great choice for patients who want their teeth restored because they can last up to 2-3 times longer than other kinds of filling materials. Gold is a highly malleable metal that can be shaped to fit your teeth seamlessly without leaving any gaps between the filling and enamel.

Mercury is the only element that can be used to create strong, durable fillings. Its ability to bond well with alloys makes it an important component in dental amalgams, contributing largely to their durability.

A metal (amalgam) filling can last an average of 15 years, white (composite/resin) fillings typically last an average of 5 years. This can be affected by teeth grinding or clenching, size of the filling, and eating habits (ice chewing, sticky foods) which can put extra stress on the filling and cause it to need to be replaced sooner.

The average time it takes to get a filling is 10-60 minutes, depending on the size of the cavity and where it is located.

The dentist will numb your gums with a numbing gel before they inject you with local anesthetic. They will then drill out the decayed area of the tooth and fill the hole in order to restore the void.

If you have stained dental fillings, they cannot be whitened. The only way to get them clean and bright again is by replacing those old ones with new ones.

The root canal procedure involves removing the nerve (also known as the pulp) of the tooth. This is necessary when the tooth has been damaged by decay extending to the nerve of the tooth, an injury, or a crack.

Once the pulp has been removed and the inside of the tooth has been thoroughly cleaned, the dentist will fill the root canal with a special material and seal the opening with a temporary filling. In most cases, the patient will need to return to the dentist at a later date to have a permanent filling or crown placed on the tooth to restore its function and appearance.

Root canal therapy is a dental procedure that involves removing infected or damaged pulp tissue from inside a tooth, cleaning and shaping the canals, and sealing them to prevent further infection. This treatment is provided as a way to save an infected tooth.

An endodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on complex tooth problems that primarily affect tooth pulp. Tooth “pulp” is what dental providers call the nerves, blood vessels and other tissues deep inside each tooth. They have a high success rate for this treatment as they typically have more specialized imaging and equipment to perform this procedure.

If left untreated, an infected or damaged tooth can lead to more serious dental problems, such as abscesses, bone loss, and even systemic health problems. In some cases, the tooth may need to be extracted, which can be more costly and time-consuming than root canal therapy.

Root canals fail when the original treatment does not remove all the infection, or the tooth becomes infected again. It can take weeks, months or even years for a failed root canal to surface.

Root canal therapy is needed when the pulp tissue is damaged or infected, typically due to deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth, or trauma. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the surrounding tissues and cause abscesses, bone loss, and even systemic health problems.

Signs that you may need root canal therapy include:

  • Severe toothache that is constant or worsens with pressure or temperature changes
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures that lingers after the stimulus is removed
  • Swelling, tenderness, or a bump on the gums near the affected tooth
  • Discoloration or darkening of the tooth
  • Pus or drainage around the tooth or gums

Root canal therapy is not painful, as the dentist will use local anesthesia to numb the affected area. Some mild discomfort or sensitivity may be experienced after the procedure, but this can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

A dental crown will be placed over the surface of your tooth after root canal therapy in order to protect it from infection and contamination. Following a root canal, the crown of the tooth can also become very brittle, putting the tooth at risk of fracturing or breaking. A crown is necessary to maintain the structural integrity of the tooth. This will prevent the need for extraction.

Root canals are often needed when tooth decay has become serious enough to reach the nerve and pulp of your teeth. In some cases, root canal treatment may be needed for severe cavities that have not been treated in the earlier stage of decay.

You may need root canal therapy if you experience severe toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, swelling or tenderness in the gums near the affected tooth, or discoloration of the tooth. Sometimes you might also experience a dental abscess, which appears like a pimple along the gumline, usually draining pus. If you notice any of these signs, you should see a dentist.

One or two appointments of 30-60 minutes each are required for root canal therapy per tooth. If you are having treatment on a tooth with multiple roots, it can take up to an hour and a half.

Root canal therapy is typically performed in one or two appointments, depending on the severity of the infection and the complexity of the tooth. Here is a step-by-step guide to the procedure:

  • Anesthesia: The dentist will numb the affected area with a local anesthetic to ensure that you are comfortable during the procedure.

  • Access: The dentist will create a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and canals.

  • Cleaning: The dentist will use specialized instruments to remove the infected or damaged pulp tissue and clean the canals.

  • Shaping: The dentist will shape the canals and prepare them for filling.

  • Filling: The dentist will fill the canals with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha and seal the access hole with a temporary filling.

  • Crown: In most cases, a dental crown may be needed to protect the weakened tooth from further damage or restore its appearance."

After the procedure, you may experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and cold compresses. Most patients can resume their normal activities the next day.

  • Brushing twice daily and flossing daily

  • Avoid eating a lot of sticky or hard foods

  • Wear a mouthguard while playing sports or other high impact activities

  • Avoid sipping on sugary, acidic drinks throughout the day, such as sweet tea, sports drinks, energy drinks, sodas

  • Get regular dental checkups every 6 months.

Following these tips greatly reduce the risk of cavities developing. By seeing the dentist regularly, small cavities are caught before they get large enough to need root canal therapy.

Although an endodontist can do a second or third root canal on your tooth, the results are unpredictable. Further treatment discussion may be needed with your dental provider.

Dental crowns are made out of different materials like metals including gold, alloys, platinum, chromium, nickel or palladium, as well as resin, porcelain, and ceramic.

A dental crown is a restoration technique that covers an exposed tooth surface to improve the tooth's appearance and strength. A dental bridge helps to replace one or more missing teeth by including an artificial tooth or teeth that are fused to dental crowns on either side.

  • Veneers- Porcelain veneers are most commonly utilized as an alternative to a full crown, and are only used for the anterior teeth (front set of teeth)
  • Onlays- Onlays work similarly and are used when a tooth’s damage is not just located on the cusp. An onlay is specifically made to cover the top of the tooth, otherwise known as the biting area, giving it back its strength.
  • Inlays- Inlays are a tooth restoration option that can often be used instead of a dental crown if the area that needs treatment is located on the top of the tooth, also known as the cusp. An experienced dentist will treat the tooth and then make an impression so the inlay can permanently bond into place.

Zinc phosphate, Glass ionomer (GI), resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) are the best glue for dental crowns.

Ceramic or porcelain dental crowns provide the best and most natural look. They are the best option for restoring front teeth. No metals are used in this. Hence the dental crowns are toxic-free and safe. Gold is also a very good option for crowns as the gums respond to well to it, there is less inflammation, and it is the least damaging to the opposing natural teeth.

Temporary dental crowns are usually made out of acrylic or metal. They are held in place by temporary dental cement, which is also called dental crown glue or tooth crown glue. These materials are generally cheap as they are intended to only last a few weeks before replacing with a permanent crown.

The most common types of crowns are porcelain fused to metal, all porcelain, all gold, and ceramic. The most common crown for children’s primary teeth are made of stainless steel.

Crown lengthening is a dental procedure that is designed to make your gums look less puffy at the base of the tooth. This procedure is used to make your tooth look longer and can be used to fix a gummy smile.

Zinc phosphate, glass ionomer, polycarboxylate, resin-modified glass ionomer, resin cements are the best dental cement for crowns.

Dental crowns are very useful for protecting, covering, and restoring teeth when dental fillings don't solve the problem.

Dental crowns generally last between five and fifteen years, after which point a patient may require a replacement.

The first step in getting dental implants is to have the implant embedded in the jaw. The next step is to attach an abutment to the implant. The abutment will then connect the implant to the crown. The last step is to attach the crown to the abutment.

It is not recommended to remove the dental crown on your own. A patient should visit a dentist to remove the dental crown.

You can help remove the pellicle layer that attracts stains by brushing your teeth with a toothbrush. You can also add a fluoride rinse and fluoride toothpaste or gel to your cleaning routine.

Inlays and onlays are used to restore damaged or decayed teeth. Inlays are fitted and moulded in the biting region of your tooth that has been damaged through injury or dental decay. Onlays are utilized for dental damage and decay to the cusps of your tooth as well as the chewing surface.

There are some food items that you should avoid eating with braces. Example: Crunchy foods, sticky foods, hard foods, chewy foods, and other types of foods that are hard, sticky, or chewy.

Porcelain inlays are a type of custom-made filling that can be used to repair teeth. They are made from porcelain, gold, or other composite materials, and are cemented to the tooth permanently.

A dental inlay procedure is a type of dental restoration that uses a premade filling to restore an extensively decayed or damaged tooth. This procedure covers the pits and fissures of a tooth's biting surface between the cuspal tips.

When compared with the Inlay, a dental crown is the strongest option to cover teeth that are discoloured or fractured.

If you take care of your teeth and get inlays, they can last for up to 30 years.

If you have severe tooth damage or large fillings that have failed, your dentist may recommend an onlay. Onlays cover a large portion of your dental area, including one or more of the chewing cusps. Porcelain onlays are composed of porcelain that has been matched to the natural tooth colour. Porcelain onlays are a conservative tooth restoration method.

The onlay procedure can usually be completed in 1-2 hours over the course of 2 visits spaced 1-2 weeks apart.

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials that are fixed to the front surface of teeth to improve their overall appearance. Veneers are permanently bonded to your teeth and can be made from porcelain or resin-composite materials.

Enamel loss and improper bite are the major causes of tooth sensitivity / tooth pain after Veneers. The pain is temporary and can be managed by simple pain meds and precautionary steps.

You should not fix or reattach your veneer at home. Always consult a dentist for fixing a veneer tooth. Regular glue is toxic in nature, so you should not use it. Usually, special dental cements are used for attaching veneers.

There is no permanent way to fix a dental chip unless it is minor. The best way to protect your teeth is to address the pain and avoid any further injury.

Cavities are tiny openings or holes that develop over time. They are caused by bacteria, frequent eating of snacks, drinking sugary beverages and poor dental hygiene.

There is no way to physically reverse tooth decay once a tooth has a cavity. The cavity will gradually worsen due to the bacterial infection inside of the tooth structure. Consider eating foods rich in magnesium that can help in preventing tooth decay.

Cavities are holes that form in your tooth as tooth decay progresses and the tooth is exposed to harmful oral bacteria.

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria and other things. It can happen when food particles containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches) are left on the teeth. Such foods include milk, soda, fruit juices, raisins, candy, cake, cereals, and bread.

  • Toothache, spontaneous pain or pain that occurs without any apparent cause

  • Mild to sharp pain when eating or drinking something sweet, hot or cold

  • Tooth sensitivity

  • Brown, black or white staining on any surface of a tooth

  • Visible holes or pits in your teeth

  • Pain when you bite down

  • Brush with fluoride toothpaste after eating or drinking

  • Visit your dentist regularly

  • Rinse your mouth

  • Consider dental sealants

  • Avoid frequent snacking and sipping

  • Eat tooth-healthy foods

  • Consider fluoride treatments

  • Ask about antibacterial treatments

If you do not treat a cavity, the decay will penetrate your enamel and then keep going deeper to the root of your tooth. This can result in tooth damage, infection, and even tooth loss. Cavities usually do not hurt, unless they grow very large and affect nerves or cause a tooth fracture.

The best way to avoid tooth decay is to avoid acidic foods and drinks. When the pH level in the mouth drops below 5.5, it creates an environment where cavities-causing bacteria can thrive.

The main cause of tooth decay is Streptococcus mutans. Various lactobacilli are associated with progression of the lesion.

  • Tooth pain

  • Sensitivity

  • Mild to sharp pain when eating or drinking something sweet, hot or cold

  • Visible holes or pits in your teeth

  • Tooth stain

  • Pain when you bite down

  • Applying ice in the painful area

  • Salt water rinse

  • Over the counter medications

  • When you go to sleep, try elevating your head up with pillows

  • Rinse with hydrogen peroxide

  • Apply either a cold or warm tea bag to your tooth

  • Chew on a piece of fresh garlic

  • Chew on the guava leaves

  • Apply vanilla extract to the affected area

  • Utilize the benefits of clove

  • Rinse your mouth with wheatgrass juice

  • Thyme oil can be used as a rinse or applied directly to your tooth

There are many things that can cause tooth pain, from a popcorn hull stuck in your gum to a chipped tooth or a bacterial infection. Some tooth pain may come from temporary gum irritation. However, if you are experiencing serious tooth pain, you will need to seek medical treatment from a professional dentist in order to resolve the pain and the underlying problem.

Dentin hypersensitivity is a dental condition in which teeth are sensitive to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and beverages, causing a sharp pain in response. In some cases, tooth pain only occurs when consuming sweet foods, which is known as sweet tooth pain.

Gum disease, improper oral hygiene or an abscess can cause sore gums around teeth.

In case of tooth injury, your tooth may be pushed sideways out of or into its socket. Root canal treatment is very much helpful in stabilizing the repositioned or dislodged teeth.

A bruised tooth can cause symptoms such as discoloration, inflammation, bleeding of the gums, sensitivity, or a persistent toothache or soreness. The blow to the ligaments that support the tooth can cause a lingering ache.

If you have a wound on your lip, it will take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to heal. However, if you don't see any improvement after 48 hours, you should see a doctor.

  • Apply pressure to the area (if it's bleeding) with a piece of cold, wet gauze

  • Use an ice cube to suck on to reduce swelling or hold an ice-pack wrapped in a washcloth to the cheek

  • Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen as needed for pain

  • Consult a dentist

Dental sealants are thin coatings that are painted on the chewing surface of the premolars and molar (back) teeth in order to prevent tooth decay / cavities.

Dental sealants are made of plastic that contains BPA. However, most sealants are BPA-free. When the sealants come in contact with saliva, they will produce BPA.

Sealants are designed to protect the chewing surfaces of teeth from cavities. By covering these surfaces with a protective shield, sealants help to block out germs and food. Sealants provide 80% cavity protection for 2 years and 50% cavity protection for 4 years.

The best time to get dental sealants is when your molars first come in. This is typically around age 6 for the first molars and age 12 for the second molars.

Clinical indications for the placement of dental sealants:
  • Patients who are at increased risk of caries due to poor dental hygiene, orthodontic treatment, high sugar diet and lack of exposure to fluoride.

  • Enamel defects in the teeth

  • Patients with complicated medical history

  • Preventive methodology for invasive dental restorations

  • Dental defects

Although sealants can last up to nine years, they may fall off sooner in some cases. Therefore, it is important to have them checked during regular dental appointments.

Dental sealants are applied in liquid form by the dentist. It will take only a minute or two to dry with the help of a curing light

Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, and B complex vitamins are essential for your gum health.

Gums act like a barrier to prevent inflammatory diseases that can damage your body. Gum diseases are linked directly with the high-risk categories of diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, premature birth, etc.

  • Prevent the gum diseases

  • Floss your teeth regularly

  • Get regular cleanings and dental check-ups

  • Follow the habit of brushing twice a day

  • Quit the smoking habit

  • Rinse your teeth with an antibacterial mouthwash

  • Use fluoride toothpaste

There are a variety of foods that can help support your gum health, including fresh vegetables, fruit, milk, yogurt, dairy products, water, sugar-free gum, nuts, tea, and whole grains.

Gum recession is irreversible, meaning that the receded gum tissue will not grow back. However, there are ways to prevent or heal receding gums at earlier stages in a more natural way. Oil pulling, salt water rinse, aloe vera usage, green tea consumption, peppermint essential oil, septilin, turmeric gel, hydrogen peroxide, tea tree oil, thyme essential oil, omega-3 fatty acids, gentle brushing, and flossing can all help to prevent or heal gum recession.

Gum disease can cause heart disease and artery problems because bacteria from the gum disease can enter the bloodstream and cause clogged arteries and heart attacks.

Gingivitis is the most common gum problem. In most cases, gingivitis usually clears up within 10 to 14 days after the treatment.

If you don't brush and floss regularly, you can get bad breath from the poor oral hygiene. The food particles that are not removed from your mouth can cause plaque formation on your teeth. The plaque-filled pockets between your teeth and gums (Periodontitis) are the major cause of bad breath.

  • Brush your teeth after eating

  • Floss your teeth regularly

  • Brush your tongue

  • Clean your dentures and dental appliances

  • Adjust your diet and food habits

  • Avoid dry mouth

  • Change your toothbrush once every 3 months

Stomach cancer is the major cause of bad breath.

Halitosis is the medical term for bad breath.

If you have chronic bad breath, it may be a sign of poor oral hygiene. Halitosis can also be caused by an illness in other parts of your body, such as diabetes, gastric reflux, liver disease, or kidney disease.

Deficiency of vitamin B12 is the cause of bad breath. B12 helps with the food digestion process. Poor intake of B12 vitamin can increase the amount of waste in the blood, possibly leading to bad breath.

As we age, the risk of developing dental problems such as cavities, tooth loss, periodontitis, dry mouth, and oral cancer increases.

Good oral health is essential for overall body health and quality of life. A healthy mouth enables people to eat, speak and socialize without pain and discomfort. Oral diseases have a significant impact on people's everyday lives. Poor oral health can affect eating, sleeping, and overall general health.

Three important vitamins are essential for the healthy mouth.
  • Vitamin D is very much essential for your teeth. Deficiency of Vitamin D can cause gingival inflammation, cavities, and gum disease.

  • Vitamin C is good for gum health. Deficiency of Vitamin C can lead to bleeding gums and gum disease.

  • Vitamin A is good for saliva production. Deficiency of Vitamin A can lead to decreased oral epithelial development, impaired tooth formation, enamel hypoplasia and periodontitis.

Good oral health provides many health benefits.

  • Prevents more serious health issues and diseases

  • Reduced health care costs

  • Stops bad breath

The purpose of an oral health assessment is to identify any oral health conditions, form the basis for treatment recommendations, and help in diagnosis. Regular oral health examinations can detect gum issues and mouth cancer. Professional advice on how to maintain and improve dental health can be provided during these assessments.

Invisalign attachments are small, tooth-colored dots that are bonded to teeth to help the Invisalign aligners move teeth more effectively. The attachments are placed around the central position of the tooth and serve as an anchor.

Invisalign clear aligners are made with the help of BPA-free plastic or something called “polyurethane resins”. These resins are actually a blend of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and 1.6-hexanediol. When compared with metal braces, Invisalign aligners are very comfortable.

Retention aligners, also called "passive" Invisalign aligners, are designed to lock your bite into place and not to move your teeth any further. They work in a similar way to standard orthodontic retainers.

The bone around the teeth being aligned will be entirely deposited one year after your last invisalign tray. Therefore, they will be stable. However, you have to regularly wear your retainers during the one year period to maintain the shape of the teeth since the bone hasn't developed enough yet.

By changing the invisalign trays too soon, a patient may face adaptation issues at the aligner-tooth interface.

Invisalign buttons are small hooks or bumps that are bonded to the tooth surface. The bumps help to move teeth and the hooks are used for interarch bands. These bands are helpful in correcting problems like underbites or overbites. The buttons are usually the same color as the teeth, so they are not very noticeable.

The purpose of invisalign chewies is to eliminate the air space between the invisalign aligner and the teeth and provide a better fit. It provides a uniform force to seat the aligner properly.

Orthodontic treatment helps improve the appearance of teeth and also supports long-term oral health.

IPR is a common dental technique used to reduce the size of a tooth in order to make more space during orthodontic treatment.

You will need to have a consultation and diagnosis before starting the orthodontic procedure.

Headgear is an orthodontic appliance that is used to correct the biting movement and support the alignment and growth of the jaw. It is usually recommended for children and is worn partially outside of the mouth.

Most insurance coverage plans have annual maximum benefits whereas orthodontic benefits are usually lifetime maximums. Once it is used, there is no more available. The insurance coverage will not renew.

TPA stands for Trans-Palatal Arch. It is used to hold upper molars in place. TPA can stabilize the position of the teeth during or after the movement of other teeth.

It is a biting issue/problem in which the top and bottom teeth do not come together or bite in the correct position. Open bite is caused by the position of the jaw or tooth or a combination of both.

Phase 2 orthodontic treatment is when braces are placed on both the upper and lower teeth in order to correct any spaces, misaligned teeth, and overbite/underbite concerns.

A pediatric dentist is a dentist who specializes in the care of children's teeth, from infancy to adolescence.

There are many types of oral sedation that pediatric dentists can use on children, such as Hydroxyzine, Diphenhydramine, Promethazine, Midazolam, Diazepam, Lorazepam, Meperidine, Ketamine, Dexmedetomidine, and Chloral Hydrate.

A pediatric dentist can help keep your child's primary teeth healthy and free of decay or other oral health problems. Good oral hygiene starts in early childhood, and regular visits to a pediatric dentist can benefit your child in many ways, teaching them proper dental habits. Cleaning teeth regularly is very important for your child's oral hygiene.

A silver tooth crown/cap is a metal cap used by dentists to cover and protect the damaged deciduous (baby) tooth from decay, damage, and bacterial infection. A silver cap is made from stainless steel and is premade which allows the dentist to fit the crown in one appointment and reduces the costs associated with lab-produced crowns or caps.

A child should start seeing the dentist every six months. Some dental practitioners may schedule the visits more often, such as every 3 months.

An autistic child may feel disturbed during the visit to Dentist. The following steps are helpful in treating autistic children:
  • Allow guardians to remain with their children during treatment

  • Prepare your own picture book or social story, showing and telling what will happen in the dental clinic

  • Make the child comfortable

  • If a child has issues with bright lights or loud noise, bring along sunglasses and earplugs

  • Come prepared with snacks, toys, videos, or other comfort objects

  • Follow up with the dentist's recommendations, with the child's disability in mind

  • Ask questions if you are not clear in handling the situation exactly

Dry socket is a painful condition that can occur after tooth extraction. It happens when the blood clot at the site of extraction fails to develop or dissolves before the wound healing process is complete. Your dentist can offer treatments to get relief from the pain.

After the tooth extraction, infection is generally cured automatically. If the infection / abscess is not curable, your dentist will drain / target the infected area in your mouth with the help of antibiotics.

If you experience post-extraction bleeding that is not managed properly, you may experience medical complications ranging from soft tissue hematoma to severe blood loss. Consult your dentist if this happens.

After a tooth is extracted, a patient may feel some discomfort in the area where the tooth was removed. Swelling and residual bleeding are also common.

You should eat soft foods like oatmeal, yogurt, mashed potatoes, pancakes, scrambled eggs, apple sauce, ice cream and broth-based soups after you have a tooth extracted. Be careful not to eat food that is hot; make sure it's lukewarm or cold because if it's too hot, it will hurt where your tooth was extracted and might cause infection. Avoid spicy foods for several days following your procedure.

Most dentists would suggest that patients drink plenty of water and avoid using a straw for several days after having a dental extraction. They would also suggest avoiding consuming beverages that contain alcohol or citric acid for at least a week.

Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen may be recommended by your dentist to get relief from the pain effectively.

Gum therapy, or dental deep cleaning, is a process in which a dentist cleans the front, back, sides, and roots of a tooth. This process is very helpful in removing tartar and other build-up on the teeth, especially in hard-to-reach areas and below the gumline.

  • Brush your teeth after eating

  • Floss your teeth regularly

  • Brush your tongue

  • Clean your dentures and dental appliances

  • Adjust your diet and food habits

  • Avoid dry mouth

  • Change your toothbrush once every 3 months

  • Regular dental checkups

  • Avoid smoking

You should eat a soft diet like pasta, warm soups, scrambled eggs, cheese, macaroni, soft cooked rice, bananas, mashed potatoes, lean meats, soft vegetables, etc. and drink plenty of fluids.

Even though you brush regularly (twice a day), using dental floss is the best way to remove plaque between your teeth. Flossing with dental floss / rinsing with antiseptic mouthwash is a very useful practice in preventing plaque formation.

There are a few common foods and drinks that can help effectively clean teeth, such as peroxide, baking soda, green tea, vitamin D, eucalyptus, menthol, tea tree oil, Xylitol gum, and lozenges. However, the most important dental cleaning equipment is still a toothbrush.

Your dentist may give you sedation anesthesia to suppress your consciousness during the wisdom tooth removal procedure.

You should take it easy for the first few days after your surgery. Avoid activities that are strenuous or require a lot of energy. Keep your surgical sites clean, and use an ice pack on your face to reduce swelling. Brush your teeth gently, being careful to avoid the extraction site area. Take all medications, antibiotics, and pain relievers as prescribed.

If you are a normal person with a healthy body, you can use painkillers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. If you have medical allergies, consult a dental practitioner.

Wisdom teeth removal is not required for all dental patients. If the removal is not performed at the right time, a patient may suffer from overcrowding of teeth, impacted wisdom teeth, overlapping of teeth, and tooth decay.

Soft foods like apple sauce, ice creams, sorbets, soups, broths, puddings, yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, scrambled eggs, milkshakes, apple juice, and ginger ale.

Sore throat after the removal of wisdom teeth is caused by sore and swollen muscles near the surgical site. A sore throat issue could last upto 3 days.

A general dentist is your primary care dental provider. This dentist diagnoses, treats, and manages your overall oral health care needs, including gum care, root canals, fillings, crowns, veneers, bridges, and preventive education. All practicing general dentists have earned either a DDS or DMD degree. Some schools simply award one degree, while others award the other.

General dentistry includes everything from preventative care to diagnosing and treating oral diseases. The goal is to keep your teeth healthy and looking their best.

Some of the most common procedures that general dentists perform include restoring damaged teeth, performing oral surgery, using lasers to treat dental conditions, placing fillings, fitting crowns, extracting teeth, placing dental implants, and Straightening teeth with braces.

Preventive services involve maintaining oral health and preventing problems from occurring. Restorative services involve repairing existing problems. Cosmetic procedures involve improving the appearance of teeth. Overall health concerns involve maintaining the overall health of the mouth.

Orthodontists are specialists who have advanced training in correcting jaws and teeth that are not in the right position. General dentists also provide care for your oral health, but may refer you to an orthodontist if you need more specialized care.

The cost of a dental check-up and cleaning can vary depending on your individual needs. Dentists charge different rates depending on your situation and where you live. In most places, an average check-up includes an exam, x-rays, and cleaning. To learn more about your specific needs, schedule a virtual consultation with one of our Dentulu doctors.

Some of the oral surgeries that general dentists can perform include tooth extractions, root canal therapy, dental implants, minor oral surgeries, minor gum surgeries, and non-emergency small surgeries to extract teeth.
